Etoffes de soie du Japon Portfolio

Item # 13048

Circa 1900

5” high by 3” in diameter

This is a beautiful portfolio called Etoffes de Soie du Japon. The editor was Ernst Henri and it dates to 1900. The portfolio consists of thirty seven hand painted sample pages mounted on grey card stock in high color on silk of wallpaper and fabric designs produced in Japan. There are actually thirty six in this portfolio as plate #12 is missing. There is an introduction in French by C. Estrade and a table of contents listing each sample. The composition and colors are exquisite. Brilliant and interesting, each sample is a work of art that could be framed separately, but as a portfolio it is magical. They have the most intricate designs using finesse in shading and composition. Some are amusing such as the carp, lobsters and bats. The lanterns took my breath away. This is a fabulous treasure that comes around so rarely.
